I lived in Beijing from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. In retrospect, it seems that the city of Beijing was very tiny, and I only had a few painter friends at that time. From the west city to the east city, hanging out was easy and quick just after a phone call or a casual greeting. Apart from visiting friends for parties, there were always visits to Red Gate Gallery at Dongbianmen. I knew Brian very early, but I'm not sure where I first met him. Probably because there were always other people at the get-togethers. As I remember, he is was one of Beijing artists' common friends. Probably because his speaks Chinese fluently, I didn't feel there was a gap when communicating with him. I remember a time when several friends were studying the aftermath of the exhibition at Brian's house. It was too hot and everyone took turns to take a shower in the bathroom. Nobody knew that the shower curtain had to go in the bathtub and the bathroom was totally messed up. Brian patiently told everyone how to do it one by one.

At that time, all my friends exhibited in the Red Gate Gallery one after another. My personal exhibition was held in 1995, which was relatively late. I have probably participated in two group exhibitions before. The most impressive one is the "Ku Xueguang Benefit Sale of Works from 17 Beijing Artists" in 1992. It aimed to help an artist friend in sickness. I had my very first sale during this exhibition. The buyer was the Swedish Cultural Attaché Nils Olof Ericsson. Later, Swedish TV gave me an exclusive interview at the watchtower.

In those days Red Gate Gallery had two venues - one at the watchtower at Dongbianmen, the other is in the CBD. It's a pity that the solo exhibition in 1995 was not held on the tower. Maybe it's easier to sell the paintings in a CBD hotel. Many artists in Beijing benefited from Red Gate, and Brian helped many young artists. At that time, artists in Beijing were able to sell paintings. Being paid in Foreign Exchange Certificates or US dollars made life more comfortable.

Later, the focus of my life shifted to the northeast. But every time on the train back to Beijing, as long as I see the vista of Dongbianmen through the window, I can't help glancing at the watchtower to see if there are any new activities. Not like the anxious passengers waiting for the announcement of stop, I know it's time to get off. With Red Gate Gallery, Brian and many memories of my youth in mind, I walked out of the car with my luggage......

I miss my friends and the wonderful times in Beijing.

Best wishes to Brian!

Li Yan was part of the gang of Chinese artists who were quite close to the Australian community of diplomats, students and foreign experts. Before there were commercial galleries, these artists including Da Gong and Li Yongbin, often showed works at various venues around the old diplomatic quarter, Ritan Park or in friend’s apartments where they were titled ‘Salons Without Sofas’. Li Yan mixed easily with his carefree manner and rich laughter.

He participated in some early shows at Red Gate including the Ku Xueguang Benefit which included the painters mentioned above and others such as Guan Wei and Wang Youshen. With other gang members Lin Chunyan and Ah Xian, he was also included in Chris Downie’s Chinese New Wave which went to Hobart and Launceston in 1992. Before he was drawn back to the great northeast, we held his solo at the China World Hotel in 1995.

Let us know when you are arriving on that train again!
